Starlink Launches Nationwide Satellite Texting Service in New Zealand

SpaceX’s Starlink Service Hits Nationwide Coverage Milestone in New Zealand

[Breaking News]
One NZ has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first telecommunications company globally to power a nationwide satellite text messaging service via SpaceX’s Starlink technology. This achievement is not only a testament to One NZ’s innovative approach but also highlights the growing importance of satellite-based communication services.

Expansion of Coverage and Partnerships

In addition to New Zealand, Starlink has established partnerships with several countries, including Canada, Australia, Japan, Peru, Switzerland, and Chile. Furthermore, they have partnered with T-Mobile in the US, marking a significant step towards providing seamless global connectivity. The expansion of their coverage is expected to benefit millions of people worldwide, especially those living in remote or underserved areas.

Currently Supported Devices

As of now, only four phone models are compatible with One NZ’s Satellite TXT service: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, and OPPO Find X8 Pro. However, it is anticipated that the eligibility for more devices will be expanded next year, making this cutting-edge technology accessible to an even broader audience.

Initial Rollout and Service Quality

According to One NZ, the initial rollout of their Satellite TXT service allows users to send and receive text messages within three minutes. However, as Joe Goddard, Experience and Commercial Director at One NZ, noted, "We continue to test the capabilities of One NZ Satellite TXT, and this is an initial service that will get better." During the first few months, the response time may increase to ’10 minutes or longer’. This temporary delay is expected to be alleviated as the technology continues to mature.

Future Developments

The One NZ Satellite TXT service aims to provide more than just text messaging capabilities. Joe Goddard emphasized that voice calling and data services will also become available in the future, ensuring a more comprehensive experience for users. "We’re beginning with a small number of phones as part of the staggered rollout of the technology," he stated.

Free Service for Existing Customers

Existing customers on paid-monthly plans can enjoy the One NZ Satellite TXT service at no additional cost. However, it is unclear whether new customers or those on other contracts will be required to pay an extra fee to access satellite-to-cell coverage. This aspect of the service remains uncertain and may undergo changes as the technology continues to evolve.

Previous Piloting and Future Developments

Starlink’s text-by-satellite service was previously piloted with T-Mobile customers in areas affected by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton in October. Following this, T-Mobile received FCC approval for the service in November. As a result, they will now be signing up customers to test the US Starlink
